The movie was released in 2005 but is set in the 1950s and 60s. His bike was a heavily modified Indian Scout. This is a documentary film from New Zealand about Burt Munro, a racer who set many records including the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. After his company has a fallout with the most popular racer, Speed decides to make his company famous, again. His parents have always been in the racing circles and own a racing company. Speed Racer is an action-comedy film about a guy, Speed, who takes up racing with his brother’s Mach Five and later, his Mach Six.

There’s a complete series but the first one is always the best.

The person who wins five races is free from his crimes. All the prisoners participating have their car modified with grenades, guns and all sorts of warfare. Starring Jason Statham and Tyrese Gibson (F&F fame), this movie is about how a private prison hosts these combat races to earn some money. Set in the early 1969s, in this movie you get to see some ageless beauties like Lamborgini Miura, the old Jaguar E-Type, Aston Martin DB4 and a couple of Mini Cooper S. This movie is about a recently acquitted guy and the wife of his late friend who plan a big heist in the beautiful city of Turin, Switzerland. After watching this, you might have the itching to go for a long ride but that’s only after 15th April. It is just a long journey on a cruiser and all the experience in that. There’s no high-speed racing or many bikes to be seen here. The movie is basically a biopic and a written journey of Che Guevara, the famous Guerilla leader.

The movie is about how a former race car driver sets out for an ultimate race to avenge the death of his friend. It features Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad fame) and Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody Fame) in an action-packed revenge movie. Can't at least for now get behind this being a lost masterpiece of pop filmmaking, yet I think it's absolutely more than worth a first-time watch or a revisit. (John Goodman performing wrestling moves on a "nonja" and an ensemble fight scene on a mountain fresh-out of a Batman '66/ Fist of the North Star hybrid being the highlights.) Even most of the performances I like, Emile Hirsch especially shining to me as a strong, likable lead. The action even beyond the racing is stellar. It'll keep the kids entertained, and the adults may even get sucked into its emotions.

While I do also think the film is definitely too long and scattered for its own good, Speed Racer unabashedly wears its heart on its sleeve, and its theme of family and childish humor mostly works. If you've felt like I have sometimes that modern blockbusters, while almost always enjoyable, are severely lacking in color, let the Wachowskis deliver the goods. Its focus is entirely on "making anime real", and wow, it looks fantastic. The CGI was never supposed to look "good" in terms of "good" meaning that it makes its creations and reality blur. On the other hand, Speed Racer honest to God does. While these two were movies that had no care for "realism" and were instead dedicated to making a candy-colored dreamscape, bringing the feverish styles of animation to live-action, neither of them managed to stick the landing. In terms of its style, the only other movies it reminds me of is Batman & Robin and, of all fucking movies, The Cat in the Hat. Now over ten years later, I'm glad to say I did sell the film somewhat short.

It was more a fun blockbuster to fill up an afternoon at Navy Pier. Digging back into the memories of nine year old me, I liked how the movie looked, I liked how it sounded, but I don't remember being wowed by it. Fun fact, not only am I someone who actually saw Speed Racer in theaters when it first came out, I saw it in IMAX. I really admire the very positive reactions this film has on Letterboxd, and I am all for a reclamation of a movie that didn't get its just dues during its initial release. I've wanted to rewatch this movie for awhile now.
